Alem Kahsay was born in Northern Ethiopia and is noted as a world class runner by industry professionals and was a member of the famous Ethiopian National Team for five years. During his professional career, Alem has run more than twenty international marathons, always placing in the top fifteen finishers, and often in the top five. Alem was awarded the “Big Apple Runner of the Year” in both 1996 & 1997. He is four time winner of the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens & Staten Island Half Marathons. His personal record breaking times include a 2:14 marathon, a 1:04 half marathon, and a 29:04 10K.
From 1997 until 2001, Alem coached the prestigious Hackley High School Cross Country Team, winning the Ivy League championship in 2000 and was head coach for the Brooklyn College Track Team for two years. He is currently a field manager for the New York Road Runners Foundation, designing and creating programs that enhance the lives of thousands of New York City school children. He was the first coach of the successful "Team for Kids", founded in 2001, and continues to coach the team.
Coach Alem is the leader for New York Road Runner’s Safety Group Run since 2000. He brings his international expertise of running to his group classes and private personalized coaching.
